Choosing a good rubber mat or custom floor mat with a rubber backing is a great first step to ensuring your protection against falls or slips.
Take a few minutes now to identify a few hazards around your home that could be the cause of a slip or fall. When you take the time to identify, control, and eliminate these potential hazards, you’re going to have peace of mind. Rubber mats certainly help, but if your home is cluttered with a lot of miscellany including books, newspapers, toys, shoes, and other various household items, it certainly won’t help. Oriental rugs are beautiful and gorgeous, but can sometimes be treacherous unless you have a rubber backing. When moving around your home, be careful around such items as ottomans and coffee tables, and anchor any loose telephone or computer electrical cords.
Cheap area rugs or throw rugs should be secured, especially if used over tile or wood flooring as these often curl on the ends. If you have any bulges in your carpeting, repair them, and remember any changes in the floor surface, such as where carpeting meets tile. Remember to wipe up spills immediately and use a sturdy step stool instead of a chair when you need to reach the top of your kitchen cupboards. Falls can happen outdoors as well. If you have a slippery deck or patio surface, get an outdoor rug with a rubber backing. In your kitchen, keep your drawers and cabinets closed and use a nonskid rug such as a custom floor mat in front of your sink. Try to refrain from keeping your floors over-waxed or polished and use good organization in your kitchen for easier access. In your bathroom, install grab bars by the shower, tub, and toilet. Be extra careful around soapy water and remember, if you have soft water, this can make showering very slippery. If you’re prone to falling, use a hand held showerhead and shower chair along with the nonskid bathmat by the shower and sink. Using rubber mats that are slip-resistant in your bathtub are also an excellent choice. Remember when maneuvering in your bathroom, that towel racks and various other items attached to the wall were not designed to hold a person’s weight, and many falls do occur when people grab onto these for assurance. One common cause of falling is puddles on the bathroom floor. Always wipe it well. Remember to pick up all shoes, clothes and other items off your floor and close your dresser drawers, too. If you’re feeling lightheaded and dizzy when you wake up, sit on the edge of your bed for a while to get your bearings. If you have braided rugs in your home, they need a rubber backing as many of these rugs are smaller in size and can cause a slip or fall easily. Don’t wear bathrobes that are too long or poorly-fitting clothing, including pant legs or sleeves too long or coats too loose and baggy. Another common cause of falls is improperly-fitting footwear. Purchase shoes with low heels that provide good traction and are slip resistant. Watch out for untied shoelaces, as these can be a common cause of falling, and most of all, use some good common sense around your home.

Hair Growth
Hair usually grows about half an inch per month, although this slows as you age. Each hair remains on your head for two to six years, and during most of this time is continually growing. An average person has about 100,000 hairs.
As a hair gets older, it may enter a resting stage in which it remains on your head but doesn’t grow. At the end of this stage, the hair usually falls out. Usually, the follicle replaces it in about six months. During this time, your hair is in its resting stage.
But many factors can disrupt this cycle. The result can be that your hair falls out early or isn’t replaced.
What Causes Thinning Hair
Thinning hair can be caused by drugs, including: birth control pills, anticoagulants, diet pills, thyroid medications; non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs including aspirin, ibuprofen, and Aleve; cholesterol-lowering drugs such as clofibrate and gemfibrozil; arthritis medications such as gold salts (auranofin), indomethacin, naproxen, sulindac, and methotrexate; beta-blockers such as atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor), nadolol (Corgard), propranolol (Inderal), and timolol (Blocadren); and ulcer drugs such as cimetidine (Tagamet), ranitidine (Zantac), and famoridine (Pepcid). And, of course, chemotherapy. Do try some of the more popular Hair Regrowth Products such as Rogaine and Propecia today!
What Is Normal Thinning Hair?
Normal thinning hair (50-100 hairs a day) is gradual. Sudden unexplained loss is not normal. Events which can trigger thinning hair include pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, severe emotional stress, rapid or profound weight loss, thyroid disorders, pituitary problems, malnutrition, iron deficiency, lack of protein, large doses of vitamin A, chemotherapy, radiation, general anesthesia, chronic illness, scarlet fever, syphilis, certain medications and hair abuse including bleaching, permanents, tight braids, tight pony tails, tight wigs, and tight hats. Try to avoid having tight and high ponytails and this can really strain the roots of your hair.
Temporary Hair Loss Treatments
If treatment fails, or is not desired professional counseling might be of help. Perms, dyes and other cosmetic options can be used to give a fuller appearance to hair. Contrary to common wisdom, shampooing doesn’t increase real thinning hair. Some salons specialize in the modern forms of hair additions; these have also made recent improvements in simulating a natural appearance. A consultation with a skilled specialist to discuss your options is advised. It is always advised that you consult a qualified doctor for advice should you suspect that you are losing more hair than you normally do.
Illness Causing Thinning Hair
For thinning hair caused by illness (such as fever), radiation therapy, or medication use, no treatment is necessary. The hair will usually grow back when the illness has ended or the therapy is finished. A wig, hat, or other covering may be desired until the hair grows back. So do not worry much about hair loss at this stage of time, take good care of your health and your hair will grow back in time.
Genetic Hair Loss
For thinning hair due to heredity, age, and hormones, the topical medication Rogaine (minoxidil) can be helpful for both male and female pattern baldness. Expect to wait 6 months before you see results. The oral medication Propecia (finasteride) is effective in some men. This medicine can decrease sex drive. When either medication is stopped, the former baldness pattern returns. However, you must have a reasonable expectation of hair growth. Rogaine works well and results can only be seen after a few months or so.
