Arthritis Treatments

Filed under: Arthritis Answer at 3:47 am on Sunday, December 30, 2007

Do you suffer from backache, neckache, headaches or migraine, insomnia, breathlessness, worry, anxiety fatigue or just fell tense for much of the time? If so, you may well be suffering from stress without realising it. As the pace of life increases, stress is affecting more and more people - even here in ‘laid-back? West of Ireland.

Stress may be caused by overworking, looking after sick relatives or simply having too much to do in too little time. It can affect us physically, mentally, emotionally and even spiritually.

Stress affects us physically by causing our whole system to be constantly on ‘red alert’, ageing us before our time. It can cause a variety of aches and pains and can even contribute to stress-related illnesses such as cancer, strokes and heart problems which can threaten life itself. It affects us mentally by causing mental blocks, poor concentration or an over-stimulation of our mind until eventually we have little or no control over persistent unwanted thoughts. It can cause anxiety worry or depression which, in extreme cases, may permeate our whole existence until life is hardly worth living.

Stress can affect us emotionally, because we can lose our temper over minor incidences and cause us to react irrationally which may damage relationships with our family or friends. It can even affect us spiritually, because it prevents us from being in contact with the peace and tranquillity that should be the very essence and foundation of our life - and worst of all, stress can cause us lose our sense of humour and even our interest in finding the craic!

At first, we may actively enjoy the buzz of the adrenalin as it rushes around our body when we take on an exciting new challenge, but long term stress can rob us of everything that is important. It can take away our good health and replace it with a whole range of other stress related disorders until eventually we are unable to relax. They are many ways of reducing stress, but one of the safest, yet most effective ways is by learning the Alexander Technique.

The Alexander Technique is a method of self-awareness on many levels. It is very simple and can be understood by anyone, yet at the same time it is very profound; It is a way of improving balance, posture and co-ordination and this in turn will help to release unconscious tension that many of us hold. The human body is, an amazing instrument, but most of us unconsciously interfere with its natural working and this can lead to many health problems which could have been avoided. The release of muscular tension can dramatically help or prevent backache, arthritis, insomnia, as well as a whole range of other physical aches and pains that are so common in our society today. By learning to use this Technique you will become more aware of how you sit, stand and move, and this will help you to reduce the strain placed upon the body. As these tensions are released, so are many of the thoughts that hold us back from being who we truly are. Many people also find that their confidence and self esteem naturally grow, and with it a natural spontaneity, a greater contentment and a deeper love of life.

By releasing unwanted muscle tension, you will achieve a greater ease of movement, feel calmer and gain a greater control over your own life. So, if you feel you are under continual pressure, for whatever reason, do yourself and your family a favour - get rid of stress before it gets rid of you!

Degenerative Arthritis

Filed under: Arthritis Answer at 3:45 am on Sunday, December 30, 2007

Rheumatoid arthritis is among the most unbearable form of arthritis, causing joints to ache and throb and eventually become deformed. Sometimes these symptoms make even the simplest activities ? such as opening a jar or taking a walk ? difficult to manage. Despite continued research, doctors still aren?t sure what actually causes rheumatoid arthritis. But it is believed that the body?s immune system attacks the tissue that lines our joints. However, a new class of drug called Oracea is offering some hope to people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. This new drug belongs to the class of Co-stimulation modulators.

Oracea work by interfering with a type of white blood cell called T cells. These T cells play a very vital role in our immune system by attacking viruses, bacteria and other disease causing viruses. Researchers believe that these T- cells play a central role in rheumatoid arthritis that creates a chain of events showing the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid. It is believed that when this T cells gets activated, there is inflammation in the joints and may cause damage.

Studies have found that Oracea can reduce the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Oracea inactivates T cells by interfering with the process that turns T cells active. If they don?t turn on it, these T cells cause inflammation in the joints and can even damage it.

Oracea is an intravenous therapy. A doctor administers Oracea into a vein in the arm and each infusion takes around half an hour to complete. Generally, one receives Oracea infusion every two weeks for the first month and then after every four weeks.

Side effects have occurred in people taking Oracea. Among them the most common side effects are back pain, cough, dizziness, headache, rash, painful hands and feet, nausea and also urinary tract infection in most rare cases. So patients are asked to carefully weigh the expected benefit from this drug against the possible side effects to decide whether Oracea is a better option or not. If any of you are concerned about the potential side effects, consult a doctor.

Though there is no treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, but with proper medical treatment with Oracea, a strategy for joint protection can be taken. This can change your life and can live a long productive life under this condition of rheumatoid

Canine Arthritis

Filed under: Arthritis Answer at 3:37 am on Sunday, December 30, 2007

Have you ever thought about what you’re swimming in? And we don’t mean the water!

Chlorine is the chemical most often used to keep swimming pools and Jacuzzis free of bacteria that can be hazardous to humans.

While the bacteria-killing properties of chlorine are very useful, chlorine also has some side effects that can be annoying to humans, and possibly even hazardous. Chlorine has a very distinctive smell that most find unpleasant, and some find overwhelming. There is also the ‘itch factor’ - chlorine can cause certain skin types to become itchy and irritated.

The hypochlorite ion in chlorine can cause many fabrics to fade quickly when not rinsed off immediately after exiting the pool. This is why a swimsuit that is not specifically designed to stand-up to chlorine and salt water may look faded and worn so early in the summer.

Make sure that the pool you are swimming in is well ventilated; extremely high amounts of chlorine gas hovering above a pool can be hazardous to your breathing.

Some companies have developed alternatives to chlorine, including other chemicals and ion generators. Some of these are good alternatives, but they don’t achieve the cleanliness, oxidation levels or low price that chlorine provides.

Chlorine kills bacteria though a fairly simple chemical reaction. Chlorine kills microorganisms and bacteria by attacking the lipids in the cell walls and destroying the enzymes and structures inside the cell, rendering them oxidized and harmless.

Ideally, the level of pH in the pool should be between 7 and 8; 7.4 is ideal - this is the pH of human tears. Once acids and ions in chlorine are done cleaning the pool, they either combine with another chemical, such as ammonia, or are broken down into single atoms. Both of these processes render the chlorine harmless.

Sunlight speeds these processes up. You have to keep adding chlorine to the pool as it breaks down.

Pain Relief Following a Swim Workout

Pain after swimming is no laughing matter. You may not need a prescription to pop an aspirin or a few ibuprofen. But that doesn’t mean you aren’t swallowing serious medicine.

In recent years, research has shown that over-the-counter pain relievers may help prevent everything from Parkinson’s disease to some forms of cancer. The rub: Overdoing it on the very same drugs could kill you.

‘Most people aren’t aware of the long-term effects of OTC (Over The Counter) abuse,’ says C. Mel Wilcox, M.D., a professor of medicine at the University of Alabama. So how do you safely harness the power of pain medications?

With this quick guide to what labels don’t tell you. As always, see your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.

ASPIRIN Best for beating: Sore muscles and back pain Hidden benefits: Swallowing 100 mg daily lowers heart-attack and stroke risk, and may help prevent some forms of cancer. Danger areas: Taking more than 100 mg every day may overly thin the blood and increase the risk of cranial bleeding.

ACETAMINOPHEN Best for beating: Headaches and toothaches. Hidden benefits: When taken daily, may prevent plaque from building up inside arteries. Danger areas: Taking more than 4,000 milligrams (mg) in a day can cause liver damage.

NAPROXEN Best for beating: Joint pain and arthritis Hidden benefits: May reduce the risk of lung cancer when taken daily. Danger areas: Daily use can increase the risk of sunburn and sensitivity to light. Wear sunscreen and sunglasses.

IBUPROFEN Best for beating: Fever and minor muscle aches and pains Hidden benefits: Taking 200 mg daily may help lower the risk of Parkinson’s disease by 38 percent. Danger areas: Taking more than 1,200 mg per day can lead to kidney failure

Ear Drops Best for Swimmer’s Ear; New Guidelines Recommend Ear Drops First, Not Oral Antibiotics, to Treat Swimmer’s Ear.

Ear drops are the best medicine for swimmer’s ear, according to the first-ever recommendations on how to treat the common condition.

Swimmer’s ear affects about 1 in every 100-250 women each year and is caused by water trapped in the ear canal. Although associated with swimming and areas with warmer climates and higher humidity, any person can get swimmer’s ear, also known in medical terms as acute otitis externa.

The trapped water causes bacteria in the ear canal to multiply and leads to infection and inflammation of the external ear canal. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and itching of the external ear canal and outer ear.

The guidelines recommend using ear drops to treat swimmer’s ear locally and say that oral antibiotics should not be used unless the infection has spread outside the ear canal or if there are other symptoms that call for oral antibiotics.

A panel of experts from the fields of head and neck surgery, pediatrics, family medicine, infectious disease, internal medicine, emergency medicine, and medical informatics compiled the guidelines based on a review of research on swimmer’s ear.

The results showed that swimmer’s ear is often severe and can interfere with work or leisure activities. With proper therapy, the pain usually improves after one day and the condition completely resolves within four to seven days.

Experts say antiseptic and antibiotic ear drops are the preferred treatment for most cases of swimmer’s ear because they offer safe, prompt, and effective relief while not promoting antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Oral antibiotics are not recommended for initial treatment of swimmer’s ear because overuse of antibiotics can increase the spread ofa antibiotic-resistant bacteria, are associated with more side effects, and may be less effective than ear drops.

In today’s technological age, having an illness does not have to be the end of the world. With an abundance of medical procedures and medicines available to the public, it is possible to cure what you have. However, many different options can often lead to an overwhelming feeling that rarely goes away. What do you turn to when there are so many different opportunities available that may come with hazardous side effects? For many, this is when herbs and other natural healing techniques come into play.

Surprisingly, there are flowers that actually provide natural healing remedies. Fortunately, these herbal remedies are 100% natural and easy for anyone to grow in their backyard. Many patients enjoy taking natural supplements because there are no side effects and there is nothing foreign going into their bodies. One of the most popular flowers when it comes to natural healing is Lavender, which is great for a series of inflictions. For instance, if you have horrifying headaches, Lavender Oil applied to the forehead is said to be soothing and very beneficial. These anti-flamatory issues can easily be cured by this flower, and also work well if you have problems sleeping. It is a known fact that Lavender mixed with boiling water will naturally put anyone to sleep. For many sufferers, this is a wonderful alternative to addicting sleeping pills that we all crave.

Besides flower extracts, natural healing can come in other forms. For example, there are also powerful herbs that thousands of people use in place of prescribed drugs. These are the most popular form of remedies, as they are easy to make and the benefits are quite clear. A well liked herb is Aloe Vera, which can actually be found in any grocery or plant store. The gel inside of the plant can help heal burns and other major cuts. It also can be taken in pill form, which often prevents ulcers and other problems within the body. If you are interested in purchasing a natural remedy in pill form, Dr Christopher offers plenty of products. Dr. Christopher’s aloe pills are a favorite, as most of them are only made from natural herbs.

Another natural remedy is Cat’s Claw. Within the roots is a mixture that not only boosts the immune system but also helps arthritis, bacterial infections, and gastritis. While it comes in tablet, cream, or tea form, Cat’s Claw is a wonderful natural healing alternative to medicine. However, if you are pregnant, it is recommended that you avoid using the substance.

Although common medicine in today’s society is incredible, many people just don’t feel comfortable taking so many prescribed drugs. If it is a subtle symptom, these natural healing remedies are great if you’d like to try them out. From flowers to herbs and other ingredients, your pain can easily go away. It not only eases your discomfort, but it also prevents symptoms from reoccurring. For people who hate doctors and prescribed drugs, this alternative will make people finally seek the help they need.
