Some of those weeds from your container garden that you are throwing out could be quite tasty!

For years, people have been making dandelion wine, which is made from the blossoms of the dandelion plant. Dandelions are also wonderful when eaten raw, mixed with a salad. The dadelion leaves are very good when steamed too. If you have any allergies that come from the aster family, don’t eat dandelions, daisies, ragweed, or their relatives, like burdock and chicory. When you are weeding your container garden, you might be throwing out some tasty food!

Burdocks can be found in area where there is unplanted soil. For many centuries Africans and Italians have been eating Burdock. The Africans call it “Gobo” and the Italians call it “Cardone”. The Burdock roots can be steamed like vegetables. People say that the stems of the Burdock plant is the best when steamed. Using Burdock roots or stems can be used in many typed of soups and stews. This food is bad for pregnant women to eat.

Lambsquarters, which is also known as Chenopodium, is good to eat after it has been steamed, like spinach. This plant is great in quiche. New England has a tradition of canning Lambsquarters throughout the winter months. The early shoots are the best to eat. Lambsquarters would make a great addition to your container garden. For centuries, both, Romans and Europeans have been cultivating Lambsquarters.

Be very careful when cultivating or eating Lambsquarters. High levels of nitrates could devolope from growing in soil with heavy fertility, or sprayed with herbicide, which could be very harmful to you. Lambsquarters contains oxalates, which is harmful for people who have arthritis, hepatic conditions, gastric inflammations, gout, rheumatism, or are prone to kidney stones.

Dock is another delicious weed people have been growing and eating for centuries. Dock is also known as Sorrel. The French have used Dock in Sorrel Soup and creamed sauces for fish for many centuries also. Dock has a very intense lemony flavor, so it would be best if you used this sparringly in your foods.

In Asia, they have been using a weed called, Japanese Knotwood, which is also known as Fallopia. The Asians would serve this vegetable steamed with rice dishes. Japanese Knotwood contain Resveratrol, which is known to help to prevent heart attacks. Having Japanese Knotwood in your container garden would be an asset to you and your loved ones.

The key to effective supplementation is in understanding how the body works and what supplements are most effective for you. The best way to understand proper supplement to use is to conceive of a nutrition pyramid. If we were to have such a pyramid, it would explain why some supplements seem to work for some people while they do not work for others.

At the base of the food supplement pyramid, we have multi-vitamins, multi-minerals, and essential fatty acids. Any person who takes a supplement without first ensuring that their diet is full of these essentials will receive little benefit from their nutrition plan. These are the absolute building blocks of your body. You have minimal sources of these three groups in your diet and they are absolutely essential to an energetic, healthy lifestyle.

Vitamins

Vitamins are essential to every biochemical reaction in your body. They are the building blocks of your skin, bone, and cartilage.

Minerals

Minerals are the matrix that make your skeletal system strong. They are also the key ingredients in many vascular components, and are essential to proper metabolic function.

Essential Fatty Acids

Essential fatty acids are the key source of many basic, metabolic processes. They are also widely known to reduce inflammation, or, rather, their absence is known to be a source of inflammation and pain in joints.

Without these essentials, it is impossible to heal a disease with more specific supplementation when the underlying functions behind human life are not properly supported.

Next up on the nutrition pyramid we have supplements for the aged and supplements for energy and stress.

Anti-Aging

Supplements for the aged are any supplement that would be considered to counter the effects of aging, or, more appropriately, allow the body to age properly. Ginseng, gingko-biloba, tribulis terresetris, DHEA, and many other herbs and supplements fit easily into this category. These supplements are generally appropriate after the age of thirty-five, and are well worth the investment if you understand what the effects of each of these might be. Research information about these anti-aging supplements, and their known effects.

Energy and Stress

Supplements for energy and stress can be appropriate at any age, It is well known that the body consumes higher levels of the B vitamins, of calcium, magnesium and iron, and of vitamin C when it is under duress. These vitamins and mineral should be taken in higher levels when you are under more stress. They will counteract the immediate symptoms of stress, such as burn out, fatigue and irritability. They will also counteract the long term effects of stress. The long term effects of stress include chronic muscular cramping and aches, adrenal gland burn-out, other hormonal and glandular imbalances, hair loss, skin conditions, crohns, blood pressure, heart problems, and the list goes on. Many supplement manufacturers will offer a stress formula that contains exactly these vitamins and minerals, Others will provide the magnesium and calcium in a separate package. Either way, these are excellent supplements to have around the house to help you deal with your stress and increase your energy.

Next on the nutrition pyramid, symptom specific supplements are a very tricky field to discuss. Often, these supplements will help some users and not others. Often, they will help for a while and become ineffective. The trick to these supplements is to follow the rules of the pyramid. You must first ensure that you have had at least a month of excellent multi-vitamin and mineral supplementation. You must also ensure that you first rule out and stress, or age combating supplements as being a superior supplementation process to the ’symptom-specific’ supplement. Finally, you must rule out any physical source to your pain. It is helpful to take glucosamine or chondroitin sulphate, for example, for knee pain or arthritis. But if the musculature surrounding the knee is stiff and tight, unbeknownst to you, this is likely the cause of the degeneration of cartilage in your joints.

Aerobic Activity is one of the key ingredients to a healthy body. While weight training is helpful in sculpting a great figure, aerobic Activity is the cornerstone to any workout and it is the foundation for a healthy lifestyle. Not only can aerobics help you stay in shape, these exercises can also help your physical well being.

People who have diabetes benefit from aerobic activity. The workout helps keep blood sugar levels on target. Simply taking a brisk walk three times each week will lower your blood sugar levels significantly. This will help you avoid complications caused by diabetes over the course of time. Such complications include heart disease and kidney failure. Your heart will thank you, too. Healthy aerobic exercise will strengthen your heart muscle and this helps the muscle to pump more blood with each heartbeat. The benefit of this is your heart does not have to work as hard to get the same amount of blood through your system. The less blood that flows with each pump, the more beats per minute required to get the job done.

This improved blood flow benefits all part of your body as well. Good circulation is a boon to every inch, providing oxygen and nutrients to the cells. A strong heart provides the blood flow necessary to keep the body well-fed. It also insures that the body gets enough oxygen to help it function to its greatest capacity. Your mood will also improve if you engage in consistent aerobic activity. This type of exercise helps elevate your mood and it helps give your body the energy it needs to complete everyday activities with ease. Aerobic exercise is also a great way to relieve stress and anxiety.

Many women worry about osteoporosis as they get older. The signs of osteoporosis can become apparent in the early 30’s in many women. Adding weight bearing aerobic activity into your weekly routine can help your body build strong bones. One of the most popular weight bearing exercises around today is walking. Individuals who suffer from conditions like arthritis will benefit from low-impact or no-impact aerobic activity like swimming and aqua aerobics. These kinds of workouts are very good to your joints. Many believe that these activities actually improve their mobility in the long run.

Of course, all of these benefits are of great interest to all of us. However, many of us like to engage in aerobic exercise because we want to manage our weight. Combining a healthy, well-balanced diet with aerobic activity can lead to the most popular benefit of all; a beautifully healthy body.

Richard henderson Is a full time aerobics instuctor in Las Vegas.

These days, more and more people are beginning to accept that natural remedies can prove to be a very effective means of treating illnesses. Science still holds many answers, yes, but the natural world around us has its fair share to offer too.

Think of penicillin ? a wonderful antibiotic that was discovered in a mould that had grown on some bread. Then think of Aspirin, which is made from the salicylic acid that occurs naturally in the bark of the willow tree. Natural treatments, the both of them, and very effective they are too. It could be argued that Aspirin is not one of the most powerful of painkillers, and that there are many more synthetic drugs that are much more effective. Perhaps this is true; but let us not forget that one of the most powerful painkillers available comes from a humble poppy. I am, of course talking about Morphine.

Let us also not forget about another natural remedy - Aloe Vera. Aloe Vera proves a very effective treatment for, amongst other things, eczema and minor burns. And how do we get Aloe Vera? By crushing up the leaves of the plant of the same name and then extracting the juice. It?s simple. It?s natural, and it?s effective.

Today natural remedies might be classed as alternative medicine, but there was a time when there was no alternative. It was a natural cure or no cure at all. Isn?t it funny how times change?

Do you remember that old saying: ?An apple a day keeps the doctor away?? Well apples are a veritable superstore of vitamins and minerals ? they taste good too ? and all of this natural apple goodness can be found in cider vinegar.

Detox is a big word these days. You hear it a lot, but have you ever heard that cider vinegar is great for detoxing a lot of your body?s organs, and purifying the blood? No? I thought not, but it is true none the less. The same vinegar can also, when mixed with honey, be used to treat arthritis. The truth is it can be used to treat a great many things from constipation to colitis.

Science has a lot of answers. Sometimes it holds the only answers. Let us not forget though that, for a lot of things, there can be other, more natural, answers that can be sought.

Cause Of Arthritis

Filed under: Arthritis Answer at 9:23 am on Wednesday, February 27, 2008

Salmon is the common name for the several species of fish from the Salmonide family. Their flesh is generally red, but there are some white-fleshed wild salmon.

There are several species of salmon, divided into Atlantic and Pacific Ocean species. The two groups are as follows:

Atlantic Ocean species

Atlantic Salmon is the species after which all the others are named.

Land locked Salmon

Salmon Trutta is another Atlantic species, also known as trout

Pacific Ocean species

Sockeye salmon is known locally as “red salmon” or “blueback salmon.”

Chinook Salmon is also known locally as king, tyee, spring Salmon, quinnat, tule, or blackmouth salmon.

Coho Salmon or silver Salmon

Cherry Salmon

Salmon is a popular source of food, and is the most popular among all consumed fish. This could be due to the fact that salmon is one of nature?s healthiest foods as it contains well-balanced, easily digestible protein (known as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)), omega-3 fatty acids, potassium, vitamin D, the B vitamins, and phosphorus. Salmon are also extremely healthy, as they contain a lower level of cholesterol than previously thought. Of course another factor that makes salmon the most popular fish, is its delicious taste and the various ways it can be prepared.

Omega-3 fatty acids are the oil found naturally in fish, and salmon has a higher quantity of this acid compared to other fish. This plus the other essential nutrients and its exquisite flavor make salmon the most popular fish. Eating a balanced amount of salmon can potentially reduce heart disease, relieve rheumatoid arthritis, promote healthy brain function, fight colitis and cancer, and control blood triglyceride levels.

Question : WHENEVER I change position from standing or squatting, I cannot bend or straighten up immediately. It takes a few seconds because I feel pain and I strain. After that, there is a sense of relief. Can you tell me the cause of this and the remedies?

Answer : YOU may be suffering from arthritis. Arthritis refers to an inflammation of the joints. It may also indicate many disorders. Arthritis can attack any joint of the body such as fingers, wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, knees, feet, ankles, neck and back.

Collectively, these are the symptoms of arthritis — pain, redness, swelling, warmth, or stiffness in joints. The pain may worsen after physical work. A severe attack may cause fever or nausea as well as fatigue and depression. Among the causes are ageing, loss of cartilage, fracture and mechanical damage, improper alignments of joints, obesity or an autoimmune disease.

Celery seeds are regarded as a diuretic that eliminates acidic metabolites through the kidneys, making it very useful in gout and other arthritic conditions. Guaiacum possesses anti-rheumatic actions, which is beneficial for stiff and painful joints. These two herbs are usually used in combination with ginger, capsicum and sarsaparilla for synergistic actions.

Diet also plays an important role. Omega-3 (from fish oil) and omega-6 (from evening primrose oil) essential fatty acids have been found to increase the body’s production of the prostaglandin that suppresses inflammation.

Avoid all red meat and saturated fats as they can be converted to inflammatory substances that can aggravate the condition. Increase intake of foods high in dietary fibre and complex carbohydrates. Watch out for foods like wheat, dairy products, corn, beef, tomato, potato, eggplants and peppers that may aggravate your pain. Cut down on the consumption of alcohol and caffeine. Drink plenty of water.

Light exercises such as brisk walking helps to keep the joint cartilage lubricated. It also strengthens the supporting structures (muscles, tendons and ligaments), and increases the range of motion and flexibility of the joints. Keep the joints warm at night and in cold weather by using a hot water bottle or towel and wear socks or cotton gloves.
